ICLA News, Board term 2011-2013

To ICLA Members, February 2013

This is to briefly update ICLC members (and other visitors to this site) on the upcoming conference, ICLC-12.

A provisional, but fully detailed, conference programme is now available. With almost 400 papers, by authors and co-authors from 44 countries, ICLC-12 looks set to be the largest bi-annual conference yet in the history of the Association. This is fitting, because we shall be celebrating in Edmonton a quarter of a century of Cognitive Linguistics as an organized and organizing presence in the scientific and scholarly world. Those of us who were present at the 1989 conference in Duisburg organized by Ren$$ Dirven will recall the electric atmosphere, the sense of intellectual adventure and the expectation that something was afoot that would bring profound changes to the discipline of Linguistics. The expectation has been borne out. Cognitive Linguistics is a thriving and diverse research community. In coming of age, Cognitive Linguistics has not petrified into a body of unchallengeable dogma. The research of the "founding fathers" that inspired us at (and after) Duisburg remains a key point of reference for researchers around the world, but new research directions are continually emerging, and new links to sister disciplines continue to be forged.

The range and variety of work that will be presented in Edmonton is amazing and impressive. We can also look forward to searching and impassioned debates on the future of Cognitive Linguistics, and on the impact that the increasing engagement of Cognitive linguists with lesser-known, endangered and minority languages will have upon both theory and practice. The organizers, Sally Rice and John Newman, have put in a tremendous amount of work, and I have no doubt that the result will be a conference every bit as memorable as the one in Duisburg. The conference organizers and the ICLA Board look forward to seeing you in Edmonton.

Chris Sinha, President

To ICLA Members, August 2011

Dear ICLA members,

Many thanks to Dafu Yang, Rong Cheng, Thomas Li and Dingfang Shu who created the conditions for a successful and pleasant ICLC 11 at the campus of Xi'an International Studies University in Xi'an, China.

The following new ICLA Board for 2011-2013 was elected at the Xi'an conference:

President: Chris Sinha
Secretary/Treasurer: Ad Foolen (continued from 2007-2011 term)

Regular Members:
Rong Cheng
Maarten Lemmens (reelected)
Margaret Winters

Ex officio members:
Ewa Dabrowska (continuing editor of Cognitive Linguistics)
Laura Janda (Past President)
Sally Rice and John Newman (next conference organizers).

ICLC-12 will take place in 2013 in Canada in Edmonton, Alberta, with organizers Sally Rice and John Newman. ICLC 13 will take place in the UK at the University of Northumbria, Newcastle.

Two new ICLA affiliates were approved at the conference: The Estonian Cognitive Linguistics Association (ECLA) and the Norwegian Cognitive Linguistics Association (NORKOG). We anticipate that conferences and workshops will be held by the new affiliates as Cognitive Linguistics continues to strengthen as a field in their respective countries.

The minutes of the Board and Business Meetings at ICLC 11 in Xi'an will be on the ICLA website (www.cogling.org) in the near future. [Link added by webmaster: Board and Business Meetings 2011.]
